Fly Away Home

chris_beament Saw Iain with 10cc live - was impressed enough to buy his album. Songwriting genuinely impressive, voice really stands out. Initial reaction was similarity to Kevin Gilbert. Certainly an influence of Andrew Gold, Tom Petty & then later Tears For Fears. But he also has his own strong identity. I have a particular fondness for artists who can both write well, perform well, produce good melodies and take songs to unexpected places just enough to make those moments stand out. This album does that!

You’re in the back, I’m at the wheel The others interchange like they were never even real Eyes on the road, I look straight ahead Just in case my amber finally turns to red And I can feel it slipping away Barely got a grip on the world I knew today Wake me up I see the wheel spin and I can’t slow it down Or turn this dream around Drop me out The car is moving faster and there is no brake So you’ve got to wake me up The car’s disappeared, It’s on a roll I’m still tryin’ to steer it with some cheap remote control Guessing the turns, I’m driving blind Swerving broken pieces of my mind And I can feel it slipping away This is not a game that I ever wish to play Wake me up I see the wheel spin and I can’t slow it down Or turn this dream around Drop me out The car is moving faster and there is no brake So you’ve got to wake me up Something’s running through my veins That can’t be real So someone tell my brain And everybody’s left me for dust Tryin’ to hitch a ride with a driver they can trust And that’s why you must Wake me up I see the wheel spin and I can’t slow it down Or turn this dream around Drop me out The car is moving faster and there is no brake So you’ve got to wake me up

Plans were made and we were on our way But life had other ideas And suddenly the sky turned grey Where did it all go wrong Everything that we knew was gone Where did it all go You’ve got to fly away home You’ve got to hide away Fly away home, you’ve got to hide away ’Til the storm is gone Our glory days when we would say The world was ours for the taking Now we stare through window panes Where did it all go wrong Believe me you’re not the only one You’re never alone but You’ve got to fly away home You’ve got to hide away Fly away home, you’ve got to hide away ’Til the storm is gone And if you hide, I’ll be on your side You’ve got to fly away home You’ve got to hide away Fly away home, you’ve got to hide away ’Til the storm is gone ’Til the storm is gone You’ve got to fly Fly Away Home Fly Away Home

Sorry for the words I never said And all the ones I offered you instead Time moved on and later was now too late I’m hoping that time won’t have its way And after your turn in bad company Well you wouldn’t believe just how much it means You wouldn’t believe just how much it means to me Oh no I hide behind the outlook I’ve been fed It’s like a mask that’s stapled to my head But I’m not tryin' to justify myself I can be so cold, cold as hell But if you heard all all my thoughts and saw my memories Well you wouldn’t believe just how much it means You wouldn’t believe just how much it means to me Oh no If I could ever let you in then you would see who I am But even if you knew what I’d been through You’d never understand Lookin’ back about three years today When the moment carried you away I ask myself that question every day Was it even me or just the one on the stage Oh and after an evening singin’ in key Well you wouldn’t believe just how much it means You wouldn’t believe just how much it means to me Oh no

You drift in and out of me Corner me in then set me free We drift in and out of love Follow feelings like orders from above Everybody knows emotions lie Tell me why we can’t decide to Try, try, try a little love Coz nothing else is good enough When you work it out You’ll see that there’s enough of it about You drift in and out of us Plan the whole trip then jump the bus We drift in and out of love Make ourselves feel like we’re not strong enough Before you turn around and say goodbye Look at what you’ve found and maybe Try, try, try a little love Coz nothing else is good enough When you work it out You’ll see that there’s enough of it about Lover, my lover Please tell me what we’re fighting for Lover, my lover Two forces in a state of war Lover, my lover I just can’t take it anymore It’s a real rollercoaster ride Hands inside the vehicle and Try, try, try a little love Coz nothing else is good enough When you work it out You’ll see that there’s enough of it about Try a little love Coz nothing else is good enough When you work it out You’ll see that there’s enough of it about

Nothing is spoken at the end of the day The guests are leaving, the laughs fade away Some lonely silence spins through the room And then you see them, those old faded faces you once knew Their smiles are beaming, there’s dust in your eye You can’t bear to let them ever see you cry You’ll never know unless you let your story go And clear your own name Let the feeling flow Until you see you can’t be the one to blame Something is broken, something feels wrong Something your instinct has known all along We’re born with our eyes closed and that’s how we live The thing about forgiveness, there needs to be something to forgive Your intuition is fear in disguise You drink in the fiction, eat up the lies You’ll never know unless you let your story go And clear your own name Let the feeling flow Until you see you can’t be the one to blame Shame is the sentence for a wicked heart But sometimes the prisoner is also the guard You’ll never know Unless you let your story go and clear your own name Let the feeling flow Until you see you can’t be the one to blame Until you see you can’t be the one to blame

All the world is watching, get yourself together Though it isn’t nothing, it won’t last forever People will get nervous, don’t like worried faces Just don’t be too conscious, things will find their places Like the boy that’s calling into wood and darkness You are slowly falling, learning where the spark is It’s between the pages, sounding in the silence Truth is not outrageous, it’s a simple cadence Let The Dove fly and pretend Noah’s rainbow is at hand And the people they will shout You’re our saviour, make us proud They’ll shout and you’ll be saved From the death that you crave You can hear them screaming, feeding on sensation So delay your dreaming, you’ve got to be patient Straighten tall and look up, hope can be so healing Pick the wonder-book up just forget this feeling Let The Dove fly and pretend Noah’s rainbow is at hand And the people they will shout You’re our saviour, make us proud They’ll shout and you’ll be saved From the death that you crave Let The Dove fly and pretend Noah’s rainbow is at hand And the people they will shout You’re our saviour, make us proud Oh let The Dove fly and pretend Noah’s rainbow is at hand And the people they will shout You’re our saviour, make us proud They’ll shout and you’ll be saved From the death that you crave Let the dove fly Let the dove fly

This singular flame, my shifting frame Keeping just above the flood I’m an individual with residual trace Of alcohol in my blood Never gonna read about my future plans Illegible palms on my dirty hands Swallow the week, spit up the weekend And hand it in a bag to my Sunday friend Sex and sex and sex is here, We all want it, we’re always thinking on it When empty dreams are ploughed up it seems We all rely heavily upon it Laughter and smiles on mile-stretched faces Cracked lines and lost minds in dangerous places When pretty paper can appear to hide the fear I really don’t know what I’m doing here Just like everybody else Everybody else Just like everybody else Just like everybody else Jesus came and Jesus claimed To be the one and only way in But you tell me that’s the easiest street for the people hung up on sin So be a good citizen, work too hard 2-1 favourite on your nearest god Just pray the same way that you did yesterday So the girl in head office can file you away Just like everybody else Everybody else Just like everybody else Just like everybody else Just like everybody else Everybody else Just like everybody else Just like everybody else
8.
I can’t tell you I’m in love I’d say too much and scare you off You had lost your faith in the world The woman had returned to the girl In the woods of wolves and men Scared to sleep or dream again That’s why I can’t tell you I’m in love I can’t tell you I’m in love Your moat runs deep, your guard is up Love was only mirrors and smoke Under the enchantment of hope He was stuck inside his mind Callous in disguise as kind That’s why I can’t tell you I’m in love with your very heart I fear that I was from the start Now every time I try to reach inside You break apart I can’t tell you I’m in love The storm has come, the seas are rough But I’ll walk with you in the rain Stand beside you, facing your pain Hope is hoping once again You’ll fall under its spell, and then That’s when I can tell you I’m in love
9.
I can’t believe I’m here to see your brand new face You didn’t want to move but the lease was up in your previous place I’d been a little bit scared to hold a body so small But when they gave me you, my heart filled up and love was all Welcome to the word, it’s a crazy place Try your best to not get caught in a lifelong human race I hope you find love, I hope you find peace I hope you know wherever you are is where you’re meant to be Welcome to the world I’m gonna mess things up coz that’s what people do But I’ll always care and I’ll never run when it comes to you I’ve been around a while but I don’t understand much All I know is it all made sense when I felt your touch Welcome to the word, it’s a crazy place Never feel you must compete in a lifelong human race I hope you find love, I hope you find peace I hope you know wherever you are is where you’re meant to be Welcome to the world We just met, don’t even know you yet But I know I love I can’t believe I’m here to see your brand new face The world shrunk down to the size of you in that time and space Welcome to the word, it’s a crazy place Try your best to not get caught in a lifelong human race I hope you find love, I hope you find peace I hope you know wherever you are is where you’re meant to be Welcome to the world Yeah Welcome to the world Welcome to the world Welcome to the world

Find A Home 03:57
Come, little one, lift your head up high You will see the sun if you close your eyes You were the one teaching me to fly And when you were done, well I cut the tie Said goodbye to you I was just trying to find a home I didn't want to leave you on your own Of all the friends I've ever known You took our love and you cast it in stone Wait for the world ‘cause it’s catching up It will place your pearl in its perfect cup Stay where you, there’s no crying now And the sea of stars makes it right somehow Heaven’s flowers bloom I was just trying to find a home I didn't want to leave you on your own Of all the friends I've ever known You took our love and you cast it in stone You cast it in stone There comes a day when the winds must change But we’ll be ok if we don’t let them blow us away I was just trying to find a home I didn't want to leave you on your own Of all the friends I've ever known You took our love and you cast it in stone

Say goodbye and tell you why Why I’m leaving this behind Why you came into my mind It’s your day and I’m away And this is my last chance to say I hope you’re happy all your days Anyway I should go out on a good note And maybe I’ll buy you a card some day I might see you down the line but in the meantime I’ll drop this song off on my way So these words are overdue But I know that I love you And I know you feel it too I can’t see who you will become In the between the setting suns But seize the moment, there’s only one Anyway I should go out on a good note And maybe I’ll buy you a card some day I might see you down the line but in the meantime I’ll drop this song off on my way Anyway I should go out on a good note And maybe I’ll buy you a card some day I might see you down the line but in the meantime I’ll drop this song off on my way

Plans were made and we were on our way, but life had other ideas…

I was having a ball, celebrating my 10th birthday (I’m a leap-year baby) and touring Australia with 10cc when I first heard about a new virus that seemed to be spreading at an alarming rate in various parts of the world. Upon my return in March the government announced that our country, like many others, was about to go into lock-down. What do musicians do when they can’t gig? Drink and watch TV. But they also create new music, and so began a project which was recorded, produced and mixed almost entirely remotely, with no two musicians in the same room at the same time (save one or two performances that were recorded as part of “The Game Begins” sessions).

2020 was such a challenging year, as so many people experienced considerable loss of one form or another: loss of earnings, of momentum, of identity, or of loved ones. As people across the world locked themselves away in the safety of their own private spaces, it felt natural that this album would reflect upon all things personal and domestic: family, friendship, finding love, finding your feet, finding a home.

Dedicated to the memory of George and Una Craigie.

about

Iain Hornal St Albans, UK

Songer/singwriter and touring member of 10cc & Jeff Lynne's ELO. Many streams of influence flow through Iain's music - flashes of classic rock that suggest David Bowie, Tom Petty & Elvis Costello blend with the lush harmony and rich textures of The Beach Boys and Crowded House. His music is undeniably pop, but drawn from an era when pop music had a brain, a soul, and a heart. ... more
